…They’d been recommended to me by a couple of clients, but I always associated Pioneer with DJs and decks. I didn’t think they’d sound that great but, 18 months later, I’m still using them as my secondary monitors. Since Kevin Grainger and myself set up Wired Masters 14 years ago, we’ve become known for specialising in stem-mastering, particularly in dance music, so accurate and reliable monitoring is of vital importance. The RM-07s have proved to be ideal for me.”
When you take them out of the box, the RM-07s feel reassuringly heavy and sturdy. My first impression was that these are well-crafted monitors. I’ve used cheap monitors in the past and you can tell when manufacturers have cut costs on a few parts, but the build quality on the RM-07s is excellent. When I first set them up, I was immediately impressed with the sound – a weighty low end, detailed mid range and a smooth high frequency response means that these are great monitors for DJs and producers.
My main monitors are a PMC MB2-XBD system and the RM-07s are a great secondary pair of monitors that really complement the PMCs. Although they sound great when you crank them up, these are also speakers that sound good when monitoring at quieter levels. They retain the dynamics and that all-important low end perfectly.
The most important things in mastering are having accurate and uncoloured monitors along with a flat-sounding room. Everything else is secondary really. All those vintage equalisers, compressors and other such outboard aren’t much use if you can’t accurately hear what they’re doing! Some speaker manufacturers might add a bass tilt or perhaps artificially colour the high end. Whilst this may sound exciting when playing back a track, it’s certainly not ideal for mixing or mastering purposes. You need to hear what’s actually in the music without any frequency being attenuated or boosted. For that reason, the RM-07s are ideal. These are also speakers that are great for anyone working with dance music. This kind of music tends to be dynamic, transient rich and bass heavy, so you really want a speaker that’s able to reproduce that sound with a sense of clarity, focus and definition. The RM-07s deliver that.
The 3-band EQ on the back of the RM-07s is a very useful function as it allows you to tweak the low end, mid range and high frequencies accordingly to compensate for any deficiencies in your room. I've been to studios where the sound isn’t that great and people have said that the monitors are terrible but half the time they’re not; it’s the room that's at fault. Speakers sound different in every room so the fact you can tweak the EQ is a great feature. I'm really impressed with the RM-07s and a lot of my clients have complimented them as well.
Drawing on a rich heritage in speaker design, the RM series monitors with HD coaxial driver units are packed with pro-audio technology to deliver a high SPL and crystal clear audio with crisp sound separation.
