“I was shocked by how heavy the RM-07s were when I first handled them. They’re amazingly well made. They’re sturdy and they’re not going to fall apart on you. The design looks cool and there’s a lot of sound that comes out of that little speaker. In fact, the amount of power really surprised me, especially the lowend. With a little speaker, you normally lose the bottom, but not with these. I was impressed – the RM-07s were completely different from anything else I already had – so I installed them in my studios in London and LA. I use the EQ settings on the back to help set them up to suit the room whenever I move them – maybe to add a little bottom end, for example – and once they’re set, I leave them alone.

They’re the only active speakers I use. They sound brilliant, especially for electronic music because of the full bottom end, but I use them for everything from pop and urban, to rock and indie.

If I had to describe the RM-07s in one word, I’d say they’re coherent. I do a real cross-section of music and anything I use speaker-wise should translate the mix, regardless of the genre. I’ve got to be able to trust my speakers and I’ve moved my RM-07s around the LA studio quite a lot, and they defi nitely translate, which is pretty important.

I’m very pin-pointy about how I place instruments within a stereo fi eld, and the speakers’ design – having coaxial drivers with tweeters in the centre – really helps with that. The 50kHz tweeter helps you hear everything. As a Mixer, you want your speakers to have a wide frequency range so you’re able to hear everything. You need to know the mixes you’re doing or the songs you’re working on translate from room to room, and I know when I send it off to artists, producers, record company management, that what I’m hearing is what they should be hearing.

One of my favourite things about these speakers is their depth and this kind of 3D thing they’ve got going on. Having that sort of depth is really great because I can pick out sounds where I’ve placed things in the stereo image. Normally, when speakers are like that, they tend to be a bit thin and a bit harsh, but these have a warmth and the bottom end’s big, so they sound great.”
